Cabinet Refinishing With Paint in Mangonia Park

The short answer

Painted cabinets in Mangonia Park last when the old finish is cleaned of grease, sanded, primed with a bonding primer and coated with a cabinet-grade enamel. We remove doors for spraying and give the finish time to cure in our humid climate.

If your kitchen cabinets in Mangonia Park are structurally fine but the color, the finish or the wear on the edges bothers you every time you cook, paint is the most direct fix. It changes the room without the dust, the dumpster and the weeks of takeout that come with a full remodel. ClearCoat Painting is based in Jupiter, roughly thirteen miles north, and we come down to this small Palm Beach County town to refinish cabinets in kitchens, bathrooms and laundry rooms. Below we answer the questions homeowners ask most before booking: how long the finish lasts, what goes wrong when cabinets are painted carelessly, how the humidity here plays into the process, and what you need to do to get ready.

Why some painted cabinets peel within a year

Most of the failed cabinet paint jobs we are asked to redo share the same causes. Knowing them helps you judge any painter's process, including ours.

Grease left on the surface is the most common culprit. Cooking oils settle on doors and frames, especially above and beside the stove, and ordinary cleaners leave a film behind. Paint over that film may look fine on day one and then lift in sheets the first time a damp towel rubs against it. The second cause is skipping the primer or using a general wall primer that does not bond to slick factory finishes. The third is using wall paint instead of an enamel, which stays soft and sticky and shows every fingerprint.

Our process from start to finish

Each step exists to prevent one of those failures.

  • Walk-through to count doors and drawers and check for water damage or loose joints
  • Doors, drawer fronts and hardware removed and labeled by location
  • Every surface scrubbed with a degreaser and rinsed clean
  • Sanding to dull the existing finish and smooth out chips
  • Wood filler in dents, gouges and old hardware holes if you are changing pulls
  • Bonding primer, then a light sanding for a smooth base
  • Two coats of cabinet enamel, sprayed on doors and applied to frames in place
  • Reassembly, hinge adjustment and a final walkthrough with you

Humidity, cure time and what to expect afterward

Even inland from the ocean, Mangonia Park air carries a lot of moisture, especially between May and October when afternoon storms roll through most days. Humidity slows the cure of any coating. We plan for longer drying times between coats in summer and use enamels formulated to resist sticking in damp conditions.

After reassembly, the cabinets are ready to use, but the finish keeps hardening for a few weeks. Close doors gently, avoid hanging wet towels over them and clean with a soft cloth and mild soap. After that cure period, the surface becomes much tougher.

Preparing your kitchen for us

You will need to empty the cabinets being painted, or at least the shelves of those whose interiors we are finishing. Clear the countertops of small appliances and anything you will need for the week. Many families set up a temporary kitchen in a dining room or garage with a microwave, a coffee maker and a few dishes.

We cover floors, counters, appliances and nearby walls, and we keep the work area closed off so dust and overspray do not travel through the house. Pets should be kept out of the kitchen during the project.

Beyond the kitchen

The same system works on bathroom vanities, linen cabinets, laundry room uppers, built-in bookshelves and even garage cabinets. Bathroom vanities need extra attention to sealing because steam and splashes are constant. If you want all the cabinetry in the house to match, it is efficient to do it in one project.

We also refinish cabinets in Riviera Beach, Palm Beach Shores, Lake Park, West Palm Beach and Palm Beach, so if you have a second property nearby, ask about scheduling them together.

FAQ

Common questions

Don’t see your question? Call (561) 292-1157 and we’ll talk it through.

How long does painted cabinetry last?

With proper prep and a true cabinet enamel, painted cabinets hold up for many years of normal use. Edges and areas near the sink see the most wear and are easy to touch up.

Can laminate cabinets be painted?

Sound laminate can be painted with a bonding primer. Peeling or bubbling laminate is not a good candidate and may need replacement.

Do you use a sprayer or a brush?

Doors and drawer fronts are usually sprayed for a smooth finish. Frames are sprayed or carefully brushed and rolled, depending on the kitchen.

Will the paint smell strongly?

We use waterborne enamels that have far less odor than oil paints. Ventilation is still helpful while coats dry.

Do you serve all of Mangonia Park?

Yes. The town is about thirteen miles south of our Jupiter base, and we work throughout it.
